That you’re fat, skinny, too short, really tall, ugly, different, stupid, odd, poor, stuck up, boogie, entitled, too cute - so something must be wrong. Bald, tight eyes, too ethnic, not woke, slow, a nerd, too dark or too pale, good hair, bad hair, fake, yada, yada, yada? If you haven’t heard them yet, get ready! Most often during your teenage years, you will either hear or be called one or the other, and guess what? We have all been there. So what do you do when faced with this type of verbal bullying?
Do you respond by returning the insult? Do you become angry? Do you try and defend yourself against the narrative? Do you walk away from the person or the situation?
Our natural response is to return the insult. Some people bully for different reasons. It could be a bad home life, lack of love and attention, low self esteem, not being able to express their feelings, loneliness etc. So, I’m sure by now you are probably wondering what does all this mean to you.
Well, it means be patient. Be understanding. Be slow to respond in anger. Be confident enough to ignore and walk away. Show grace, bullies need friends too. Everyone wants to be liked, including adults. Keep this in mind always, blessed is the girl with inner beauty and intelligence. She is strong, smart, beautiful, confident and a warrior. At the end of the day, words are just words and bullying of any kind is never okay.
